Who we are

Smart Grocer is a grocery app for the United States, operated by Bentley Williams. This policy covers the app and the website at https://smartgrocerapp.com, including the waitlist and related account pages.

Information we collect

Waitlist

When you join the beta waitlist on this website, we collect:

• Email (required)
• First name (required), and last name if you share it
• A 5-digit US ZIP code (required)
• Stores you shop at, if you share them
• Shopping frequency, how many stores you visit per trip, typical list size, monthly spend range, what you want help with, and optional notes
• The date you signed up, and your browser’s user-agent

The waitlist does not collect payment details, an Apple ID, a full grocery list, or a password.

Account

When you create an account and use the app, we collect:

• Email, and a hashed password (we do not store the password in plaintext)
• First name and last name (both required)
• Full US home address: street, city, state, and ZIP
• Latitude and longitude for that address, from the US Census Geocoder
• Your location-permission choice (device location granted, or use home address), and a prefer-current-location flag
• Device location only when you grant permission and use it for a session or request. We do not keep a standing GPS log unless you save a location as your home address
• Dietary preferences
• My Stores — at least two: chain, store name, address, latitude and longitude, internal store ids, and pin or auto mode
• Grocery lists, optimized trips, and trip history
• Subscription tier and trip credits

On your device

• Your sign-in session, in secure storage
• Free-tier grocery lists, in secure device storage
• Your preferred map app, stored locally

Email codes

We send email verification codes and password-reset links through Resend. Those messages contain only what you need to finish the step.

Older web billing

Some accounts may still have subscription or payment metadata from an older web Checkout path. Card numbers are handled by Stripe. We do not store card numbers in our database. Mobile purchases are moving to Apple and Google in-app purchase. Stripe is not the planned billing path for the app stores.

Product analytics

The mobile app uses PostHog on US Cloud (host us.i.posthog.com) to understand how the product is used. That can include device and app identifiers, app lifecycle events, allowlisted screen views, and product events such as signing up, starting a trip or optimize, opening feedback, opening subscription management, opening My Stores, opening shopping preferences, and tapping delete account.

When you are signed in, your account email may be stored as a person property. Logging out or deleting your account resets the analytics identity. Session replay is not enabled. This website does not use PostHog.

Feedback

Userjot receives messages and votes from the website widget and from Send feedback in the app. If you open feedback while signed in, we may share your account email or user id with Userjot.

How we use it

We use this information to:

• Run your account and keep you signed in
• Invite waitlist signups to the beta
• Compare grocery prices and optimize your lists
• Personalize results using your stores, diet, and location
• Apply subscription limits and trip credits
• Send transactional email, such as confirmations, verification codes, and password resets
• Keep the service secure
• Improve the product

We do not sell personal information. We do not use data for cross-app advertising.

Processors

These companies process information for us, only as needed to provide their service:

• Supabase — accounts, database, and authentication
• Resend — transactional email
• ScrapeHero — live price lookups. We send search terms and retailer store ids only, not your Smart Grocer user id
• Google Gemini — grocery list text, so we can match products
• US Census Geocoder — the home address you submit, so we can turn it into coordinates
• Cloudflare — hosting this website, including ordinary request metadata
• PostHog — product analytics in the mobile app
• Userjot — feedback messages and votes
• Stripe — only for leftover web billing on older accounts

We may also disclose information if the law requires it, or to protect the rights, safety, and security of Smart Grocer and our users.

How long we keep it

• Account, profile, stores, and trips: until you delete your account
• Waitlist: while the beta is active, then we delete or archive it when we no longer need it to invite testers
• Email verification codes: short-lived
• Password-reset links: about 15 minutes, and single use
• Analytics and feedback: according to PostHog and Userjot retention
• Backups: overwritten in the normal backup cycle
• Billing or legal records: only where the law requires us to keep them

Your choices

• Waitlist. Email social@smartgrocerapp.com to correct your details or ask us to remove you.
• Profile. Edit your name, home address, dietary preferences, My Stores, and location settings in the app.
• Location. Revoke location permission in your device settings. The app then uses your home address.

Delete your account

You can delete your account in the app. Deletion is permanent and signs you out.

1. Open the Smart Grocer app and sign in.
2. Tap the profile icon (gear) to open Settings.
3. Tap Privacy & Security.
4. Scroll to Delete Account and tap it.
5. Read the warning, then type DELETE to confirm.
6. Tap the button to permanently delete your account.

You can also follow the steps on our delete account page, or email social@smartgrocerapp.com from the address on your account. We may ask you to confirm you own that address before we delete it.

Children

Smart Grocer is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child submitted information, contact us and we will delete it.

United States

Smart Grocer is a United States product. We do not run a separate EU or UK privacy program. If you live in California, you can email us to ask about access to or deletion of personal information we hold about you.

Security

Our providers encrypt information in transit and at rest. No method of storage or transmission is perfect.

Changes

When this policy changes, we post the update on this page and change the Last updated date.
